Lake Weeds Update

This year is offering some weed unique challenges. Nutrients promoting plant and algae growth can come from different sources; decaying vegetation from previous spray events, phosphates coming from lawn fertilization and farmer's fields upstream from our lake and poorly functioning septic fields in our subdivision. This spring I witnessed a lawn care contractor blowing leaves into the north channel along Indian Trail; this is also a no-no. Another factors this year are new EGLE limits for spray applicators who now can only apply spray 100' out from shore (previously 300'). That's why there were residual algae blooms out in middle of lake after last spray even on June 4th. Stay At Home has also caused our spray season to start late as well, due to boating restrictions. Our sprayer had promised to come out Monday June 29th for the next spray application. I pushed back and now its WEDNESDAY JUNE 24th, so relief is coming. I also want to especially make sure things are under control for our July 4th holiday weekend so residents and visitors alike can enjoy our lake. As a reminder, if you allow friends to launch their boats, PLEASE ENFORCE Clean, Spray and Flush boats and trailers BEFORE/AFTER entering the launch.
Sincerely, Burns Roland
Chairman of Barnes Lake Lake Improvement Board.
