Scouting Report: Holly Selesky is leaving the organization the end of August. Frank Wasniowski will be taking on this role in September. The troop has had online committee meetings and troop meetings over the past few months. There is a scout ready to begin his Eagle project. He will build an outdoor game table for the Fowler Center in Mayville. This will be the troop’s 4th project at the camp for Disable Adults. He hopes to complete the project this summer. There have been 5 new scouts that have joined the Pack 135 in North Branch. There will be a welcoming ceremony at some point for the new scouts. There are 12 scouts and 4 leaders who plan to go to summer camp at Camp Hiawatha. Some members have chosen not to attend this year. The troop did a road clean-up for the Club this weekend. They cleaned up along Hickory Place and then along Indian Trail/Barnes Lake Road.
Barnes Lake Improvement Board: Aquatic Services had been in once and are scheduled to be back in tomorrow to spray for native species. May 13 an Algae bloom took place and May 17 weeds developed everywhere. A heavy treatment is scheduled giving the weeds a 1 -2 punch in an effort to get them under control. They are working hard to get the lake in shape by July 4th, but it has been a very difficult year. It is believed many things are creating the issue this year, such as decaying weed creating fertilizer for new growth, weather conditions, and lack of activity to name a few items.
A question followed by a discussion to place in regards to the dam. Burns will take the concerns to the Barnes Lake Improvement Board in working to get a plan in place for inspection of the dam, future maintenance plan, and determine if any permits are needed. The Board meets on July 11, 2020. Once a discussion this concern is discussed with the board and a plan is in place he will present the information to the Barnes Lake Club.

Special Event Reports:
- Lake wide Garage sale: Tabled until the next meeting; motion made by Linda Zukonik and seconded by Pam Reid, The motion carried.
- Concerts in the Park: The event schedule for June 13, 2020 was scheduled as a family event with cornhole tournament, trivia, etc. This type event was a concern due to people being in close proximity of each other; the use of the bathroom facilities and several other reasons. Discussion took place on having music only and not allowing persons out of their boats or to use the bathroom facilities. After much discussion, Derek Morey made the motion to cancel the schedule June 13, event in the park. Teresa Rolland seconded the motion. The motion carried.
- July 4th Events: This was a lengthy topic of discussion. Events reviewed included the following:
- Bike Parade: In working to maintain social distancing several concerns developed in regards to handing out beverages; kids being able to ride a bike around the entire lake without being picked up by a vehicle; limiting the parade to only golf carts; etc. After much discussion it was decided that Teresa Rolland would make the final decision if the Bike Parade would take place this year, due to all of the concerns about Covid-19 and social distancing practices. Teresa was to inform Linda by June 6th if the Bike Parade would take place. Bike Parade was canceled due to concerns about Covid – 19 and social distancing.
- Fireworks Display: After a long discussion it was determined that it was too late in the schedule to cancel this year’s Fireworks display. There was a long discussion on this event with concerns about an influx of people due to Barnes Lake having the only Fireworks display in the area; that this year would be extremely hard event in planning to prevent issues; the collection for donations was discussed with Derek planning to ask for donations; extra police assistance and help from the Boy Scouts, Derek will work with Hank on these two items. Derek Morey, as the board member assigned to this event was on board to do whatever needed to be done in having a successful 4th of July display.
- Fireworks display “Rain Day” is July 5, 2020
- Boat Parade: This event will take place with no changes. Lacy Minard will oversee this event.
- Annual meeting, Saturday, July 11, 2020: In having this meeting social distancing was the main concern. Suggestions on having an outside meeting took place, but later decided against for several reasons; Discussion to place about using the larger upstairs room at the Township Hall, which seemed to be a good option. Linda Zukonik stated that she would find out about the hall, if we could get the large room upstairs and if the hall was allowing gatherings due to Covid-19.
- Annual Picnic, Saturday, August 1, 2020: Linda spoke Brian’s prior to this meeting. They informed Linda that they have not done any catering due to Covid-19 and that they did not know when they would start up again. After much discussion about the annual event Social Distancing and the concern for Barnes Lake Members health with such a large gathering became too great of an obstacle to overcome. A motion was mad by Derek Morley to cancel this event due to Covid-19. Teresa Rolland seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Beach/Pavilion Maintenance Report:
- Alex Reported the following items had been completed:
- Dock at the ramp was moved over 30”
- The well pump at the park was pulled and reinstalled after cleaning.
- Waiting on electronic fence components. He believed they would be dropped off next week. Linda provided additional information on the electric entrance gate that will replace the current beach entrance gate. This new electric gate will use the same gate card used to open the boat ramp gate. You must be a Barnes Lake Property owner to receive an entrance gate card. One card is issued per property owner. Contact Linda Zukonik if you don’t have an entrance gate card. Linda will issue you a new card. If you need a new card to replace one that was lost you will have to pay $ 50.00 for a replacement card.
- Removal of a large amount of goose poop from the park this year. Michigan Department of Environment, Great lakes and Energy (EGLE, formally known as DEQ) did not issue the goose egg removal permit this year due to Covid, which is causing the goose poop issue. Alex is looking for help or suggestions on how to deal with this issue.
- Linda Zukonik let everyone know that we need a new couple to replace a couple that no longer will be able to lock the gate this year. Linda is looking for someone to volunteer to help with the beach gate to make sure it is locked. Please contact Linda if you would like to help out with this task.

- Club membership fees pay for all our fun activities, it pays for all the maintenance to the clubhouse, lady liberty, park lots and beach area.
- Barns Lake Club keeps our beautiful lake private in maintaining the gates at the boat ramp and at the beach. Volunteering to monitor areas for trespassers. Facilitates good communication with local law enforcement
- Without the club there is no boat gate, no clean private beach, no maintenance to all of Barnes lake assets, and no activities.
- MORE members build a stronger organization. A stronger Barnes Lake Club has more resources to get things done and keep our community strong!
